In the Fall of 1971, the Northwestern Board of Trustees established “The Department of Afro-American Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.” As we prepare for our day of Celebration on May 20, 2022, come learn about the history of the department’s founding and early years. This will be a participatory event. We will look at and discuss primary documents from the first decades of the department, and read about the debates, decisions, and aspirations upon which we now continue to build the department. Join experts Charla Wilson and Martha Biondi, and students, faculty, and AFAM alumni, as we dig in the archives to learn about our beginnings.
