"Nicknames as Tools for Navigating Social Space "
Nicknames are expressions for identifying and tracking individuals. But they also mark and modulate social relations; and they frame their referents by purporting to ‘fit’ them in an intuitive way. These social functions make them especially potent rhetorical devices, for good and for ill; and also especially challenging to model within orthodox theories of meaning.
