One Recipe for Two Flavors of Generics: How Contextual Restriction and Stability Give Rise to Essentialist and Structural Generics"
(joint work with Ny Vasil)
In this talk, we will argue for a unified picture of essentialist and structural generics (e.g., 'Birds have wings', 'Women are emotional') by considering the role of implicit contextual
restriction and stability across background conditions. Along the way we consider ways generic thinking relates to causal cognition, the human goals of predicting, controlling, and
manipulating, and ways kind representations themselves mightaffect our acceptability judgments.
