Brand new to coding? Want to learn R? This workshop teaches vital concepts to those with little to no previous experience with computer programming. This workshop will help you gain familiarity with the central concepts needed to use R productively and successfully. Those completely new to R and unfamiliar with the concepts taught in this workshop should plan to take this workshop before the R Fundamentals 3-day Bootcamp in Evanston. 

Things you will learn in this workshop: 

-Filepaths: how to read your data files 

- Variables: how does R store values and data sets 

-Data Types: what are they and how to handle them 

- Comparisons and conditional tests: for selecting and subsetting data 

- Vectors and indexing: how to reference individual observations or subset a list of values 

-Functions: calling them, arguments and parameters, return values 

- Interactive coding vs. scripts 

This workshop will happen live, in-person and will not be recorded. You will need to bring a laptop to participate. Instructions will be sent out after you register on how to install R to your laptop or access it on the cloud from your laptop. 

Prerequisites: None 

Cost: $20 for Northwestern University and Northwestern Medicine affiliates plus Eventbrite Service and Processing fees (fees are non-refundable) 

-Price includes morning coffee and tea. Lunch is not included, but a one hour lunch break will be provided.
