Description:

Abstract: Quantum transducers enable the conversion of quantum information and signals between different physical platforms. In the field of sensing, microwave-optical quantum transducers are particularly significant as they combine the strengths of microwave and optical photons. Extensive simulations and analyses demonstrate that the main limitation in current transduction demonstrations lies in the microwave quality factor. The conversion efficiency can be enhanced by effectively coupling superconducting cavities, characterized by long-coherence times, with electro-optic nonlinear materials. This innovative approach will expand the capabilities of quantum sensors and distributed sensor networks for dark matter searches. In 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science selected this research project for funding as part of the Early Career Research Program. It holds the potential to bring transformative advances across various scientific fields and impact critical areas such as national security and quantum communication. This research stems from accomplishments at the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Research Center, one of five DOE National Quantum Initiative Research Centers, at the forefront of quantum computing and sensing.

Speaker: Silvia Zorzetti, Senior Engineer, Fermilab
