Biography - Elizabeta Nemeth, PhD

Elizabeta Nemeth is a Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Director of the UCLA Center for Iron Disorders. Dr. Nemeth received her BS in Molecular Biology at the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and a PhD in Cell, Molecular and Neurosciences at the University of Hawaii. She joined UCLA in 2002, and since then has been studying the molecular basis of iron homeostasis and pathogenesis of iron disorders, with a specific focus on the function of the hepatic peptide hormone hepcidin and its receptor, iron transporter ferroportin. Her work helped define the regulation of hepcidin production by iron, inflammation and erythropoiesis, the role of hepcidin in different iron disorders including hereditary hemochromatosis, β-thalassemia, and anemia of inflammation, as well as its roles in innate immunity and iron regulation in pregnancy. She contributed to the elucidation of the mechanism of action of hepcidin as the ligand of ferroportin, and to the discovery of a novel hepcidin-regulating hormone erythroferrone. Dr. Nemeth has co-founded three biotechnology companies focused on hepcidin-targeted diagnostics and therapeutics.

Dr. Nemeth currently serves on the NIH Innovative Science Accelerator (ISAC) Program panel, is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Hematology, and President of the International Bioiron Society. She is involved in the career development of junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students at UCLA as a co-director of the UCLA K program for young faculty, director of NIDDK-sponsored training grant for pre- and postdoc trainees, and executive committee member of a UCLA graduate program in molecular physiology. Dr. Nemeth received the Grace Goldsmith Award from the American College of Nutrition in 2007 for significant contributions to the field of nutrition, BioIron Presidential Award in 2019 for seminal work on the mode of action of hepcidin and the molecular basis of systemic iron homeostasis, and the William Dameshek Prize from the American Society of Hematology in 2021 for outstanding contribution to the field of hematology.
