Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute
Joseph Makhema is the CEO of the Botswana Harvard Health Partnership formerly Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership (BHP), He is an Internal Medicine Physician by Training. He Provides Strategic Leadership, Coordinates and oversees the research and training activities conducted at the BHP. He advises on the selection of Protocols for the Botswana clinical research sites and participates in quality management systems, including monitoring and evaluation of studies conducted at the BHP. He maintains contact with relevant Stakeholders and participates in various Ministry of Health and national technical working groups and committees.
Dr. Makhema is Co-PI of the BHP Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), affiliated with ACTG, IMPAACT, HPTN, COVPN and site PI for the HPTN and COVPN . He oversees a large team of clinical staff implementing multiple trials in parallel, many under investigational new drug applications at two clinical research sites in Botswana. The BHP has become a center of clinical trials excellence, with successful performance in external trial monitoring including a recent successful European Medicines Authority inspection for the HPTN 084 study.
