A ‘whole person’ approach to pain management is recognized as best practice. Yet evidence-based behavioral interventions are inaccessible to most patients. 1-session behavioral pain intervention may begin to meet the needs of a population of patients and enable rapid access to lowest risk pain care. Empowered Relief®, a 1-session pain relief skills intervention developed by speaker Beth Darnall, PhD, is NIH- and PCORI-funded, with research showing non-inferiority to 8-session CBT at 3 and 6 months post-treatment. Empowered Relief can integrate into clinical practice broadly, be accessed by patients online, and enable efficient clinical treatment study designs. Efficacy data from 4 published randomized trials will be reviewed, along with multiple active trials in the U.S. and Canada. Empowered Relief is copyrighted and trademarked by Stanford University; Dr. Darnall receives no personal revenue from the Stanford University CME Empowered Relief® instructor certification workshops.
