Please join the Global Religion and Politics Research Group and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program as they host Nicolás Panotto (Associate Researcher of the Institute of International Studies (INTE) at Arturo Prat University in Chile and Professor at Comunidad Teológica de Chile)
Since 2016, faith-based organizations and coalitions linked to the Latin American evangelical field have been conducting advocacy work in the Inter-American System through the OAS Civil Society Dialogue, IACHR hearings, as well as strategic litigation in the Inter-American Court. This talk explores how narratives of "religious freedom" shape this work, making religious worlds visible and advocating for political positions in the human rights field in Latin America.
About the speaker:
Nicolás Panotto is a Visiting Scholar in the Center for International and Area Studies at Northwestern and at Garrett Theological Seminary. An Argentinian theologian, he is a graduate of the Instituto Superior Evangélico de Estudios Teológicos (ISEDET), Argentina. He holds an M.A. in Social & Political Anthropology and a PhD in Social Sciences from the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), Argentina, and is an associate researcher of the Institute of International Studies (INTE) at Arturo Prat University in Chile and professor at Comunidad Teológica de Chile. His research interests include contemporary theologies, comparative religions, and systematic theology. He serves as director of Otros Cruces, an organization dedicated to inspiring dialogue, democracy and human rights through knowledge exchanges between religious communities and civil-society organizations. In addition to Decolonizing Theological Knowledge in Latin America: Religion, Education and Theology with a Postcolonial Accent (Editorial JuanUno1, 2021), Dr. Panotto is the author of several books and articles in the field of religion and politics, public theology, and postcolonial theory/theology.
