Israel Behind the Scenes with filmmaker Barak Heymann
Monday, March 4
4:30 p.m. CST
Norris University Center
Wildcat Room
The Northwestern Israel Innovation Project and the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema present “Israel Behind the Scenes” featuring award-winning Israeli filmmaker Barak Heymann LIVE. The October 7 attack has traumatized both Israelis and Palestinians. It also holds the potential for inevitable and much-needed change. During Barak’s program, he will share the painful reality in which he lives and what he believes is needed for this turbulent war to give way to a better and more humane future. Through this talk, Barak interweaves select clips of films and television series, like Bridge Over the Wadi (2006), Almost Friends (2014), Comrade Dov (2019), and a new yet unfinished documentary, all of which touch on issues and layers that make the Israeli reality so complex – conflicted and racist, but at the same time full of potential, activism and hope.
Barak Heymann has been directing and producing documentaries for TV and cinema for more than 20 years. Heymann Brothers Films, the independent film company led by Barak and his brother Tomer, has produced over 30 documentaries, some as international co-productions. Their films have premiered in numerous festivals worldwide, such as Berlinale, IDFA, and Hot Docs, where they have won prestigious awards.
