Derrick Gardner and Darius Hampton, conductors
A virtuosic saxophonist as well as an excellent composer, Joshua Redman is among the most innovative and influential jazz artists of the present day. A 1991 win of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition led him on a path to becoming one of the most prominent artists in jazz today. To date, he has recorded at least 29 studio albums as a lead or co-lead artist and dozens more as a side man. Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Jackie McLean began his career playing with numerous jazz luminaries at a young age, recording with Gene Ammons, Charles Mingus, and on Miles Davis’s Dig album and becoming a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. His landmark 1962 album Let Freedom Ring heralded a new direction for the artist, blending hard bop with modal and free jazz. Join the Jazz Small Ensembles for a celebration of the music of Redman and McLean.
