Joe Clark and Derrick Gardner, conductors

Singer, pianist, and actor Nat “King” Cole recorded over 100 chart-topping songs over the course of a career spanning nearly three decades. “Unforgettable,” “When I Fall in Love,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Straighten Up and Fly Right” are among his many hits that remain popular today. Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Jackie McLean began his career playing with numerous jazz luminaries at a young age, recording with Gene Ammons, Charles Mingus, and on Miles Davis’s Dig album and becoming a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. His landmark 1962 album Let Freedom Ring heralded a new direction for the artist, blending hard bop with modal and free jazz. Join the Jazz Small Ensembles for a celebration of the music of Cole and McLean.
