Description:

Derrick Gardner, conductor

Frank Benjamin Foster III was a skilled tenor and soprano saxophonist, a composer and arranger of the highest caliber, and, later in his career, a successful bandleader. Principally known for his 11-year involvement with the Count Basie Orchestra, Foster contributed arrangements and original compositions including “Shiny Stockings,” “Down for the Count,” “Blues Backstage,” and “Back to the Apple.” He was also the founder of jazz ensembles The Non-Electric Company, Swing Plus, and The Loud Minority Big Band. In 1986, he succeeded Thad Jones as leader of the Count Basie Orchestra, leading them to two Grammy Awards. The Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble celebrates Foster’s music and legacy.
