Darius Hampton, conductor
Known for his unique voice as both a saxophonist and composer, Benny Golson rose to prominence in the 1950s playing in the bands of such renowned artists as Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakey. He wrote popular jazz standards including “Killer Joe,” “Along Came Betty,” “I Remember Clifford,” and “Whisper Not.” Golson was recognized as an NEA Jazz Master in 1996, and he is the last surviving jazz artist captured in the famous 1958 photograph “A Great Day in Harlem.” Join the new Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble in a celebration of Golson’s music.
