Are you interested in giving your students more hands-on STEM learning opportunities? Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and learn more about algae? If so, please join us at the Algae Foundation’s virtual Summer Algae Science Institute! SASI for short.

SASI is a 1-day professional development opportunity facilitated by Algae Academy alumni educators that walks participants through the Algae Foundation’s K-12 Algae Academy curriculum. The Algae Academy’s FREE STEM kit and curriculum includes teacher resources, all necessary lab supplies, and live algae that will have your students asking big questions as they realize the real potential of algae. Students cultivate algae, monitor its growth, analyze and interpret data, and make connections as to how algae production has a positive impact on the global environment. Or as we like to say, we take algae from “Ick!” to “Awesome!”

SASI is appropriate for K-12 STEM educators with NGSS aligned curriculum broken down into Elementary, Middle and High School levels. SASI participants will have the opportunity to teach the Algae Academy to their students in the 2024/2025 academic year in the Fall (October) or Spring (March).

SASI training will include:

-Stipend for attendance
-Continuing Education Credits
-I Love Algae T-shirt (the really soft kind)
-Algae Academy mini-kit shipped to your home so we can all follow along together virtually.
-Guaranteed spot in 2024/2025 Algae Academy
-A complete walkthrough of the Algae Academy’s 5-day curriculum.
-Opportunity to hear from industry insiders and gain more in-depth background knowledge.
-Ability to troubleshoot how the curriculum would work best in your classroom.

After completing the SASI training, educators should feel fully confident in bringing the Algae Academy into their classroom and getting their students excited about the power of algae!

Participants will receive a stipend. Illinois licensed teachers will be eligible to receive 7 hours of professional development that can be used toward Illinois teacher licensure renewal.
