Join us on May 9, 2024, as we welcome Sarah Deer from the University of Kansas.
As our keynote speaker for our annual Law in Motion lecture, Sarah Deer will speak on
"What if Survivors Wrote the Laws? An Exploration of Tribal Statutes on Sexual Violence".
Sarah Deer is a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, University Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas, and Chief Justice for the Prairie Island Indian Community Court of Appeals. A lawyer by training but an advocate in practice, Deer’s scholarship focuses on the intersection of federal Indian law and victims' rights, using indigenous feminist principles as a framework. Her efforts to address criminal justice reform on Indian reservations have received national awards from the American Bar Association and the Department of Justice. Prof. Deer was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2014 and a Carnegie Fellow in 2020. In 2019, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
