Join the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) for our September Current Issues in LGBTQ Health lecture, Perinatal Wellbeing of Sexual and Gender Diverse Pregnant People: Implications for Intervention Adaptations, featuring Dr. Leiszle Lapping-Carr.
About the Lecture
Reproductive mental health of queer and trans people is a woefully understudied area, despite consistent calls from the LGBTQ+ community for more research on this topic. There is widespread acknowledgement that depression during pregnancy and postpartum (perinatal depression) is a significant issue. Perinatal depression impacts as many as 1 in 5 cisgender, heterosexual women, and 1 in 3 cis women with diverse sexual identities. Prevalence rates among trans and non-binary people are unknown. To date, there is no published research on evidence-based interventions for sexual and gender diverse birthing parents, and current perinatal depression interventions are highly cis- and hetero-normative. Dr. Lapping-Carr will present preliminary results from an ongoing qualitative research study aimed at understanding aspects of SGD birthing parents’ experiences of their mental health and health care during the perinatal period. She will also discuss how this data will be used to adapt an evidence-based preventive perinatal depression intervention to be affirming of and applicable to SGD birthing parents.
