We will watch and discuss Writing on the City by Keywan Karimi. This film explores the history of writings, chants, slogans, murals, and graffiti on the walls of Tehran, the capital of Iran. Karimi examines the evolution of these public expressions to explore contemporary Iranian history, from the 1979 Revolution to the ongoing repression imposed by the Islamic Republic. The film is reminiscent of the essay film style, demonstrating how walls have become a medium for ordinary citizens to voice their opposition. In 2013, Karimi was arrested by the Revolutionary Guard Corps. In October 2015, he was sentenced by the Islamic Revolutionary Court to six years of imprisonment and 223 lashes for "propaganda against the Islamic Republic" and "insulting religious sanctities." This event will be held on October 29th at 10 AM in Louis Hall, Room 106, as part of Mehrnoosh Fetrat’s Graduate Production Workshop. It is sponsored by the RTVF and MENA departments at Northwestern University. The film is one hour long, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. Join us for this insightful event.
