Composed between 1961 and 1962, Benjamin Britten’s Op. 66 War Requiem was commissioned for the consecration of England’s new Coventry Cathedral in Warwickshire—built on the remains of the original 14th-century Cathedral of St. Michael, which was destroyed during a World War II bombing raid. The work interweaves the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead with nine poems concerning war by Wilfred Owen, who had died in battle in France just a week before the end of the First World War. A statement of protest against conflict and violence, the War Requiem remains a powerful and poignant musical expression to this day.
