Dr. Kadir Bahar is the colloqium speaker for the Human Development and Social Policy Brown Bag on Tuesday, April 22. Dr. Bahar joins us from the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia. Currently, he is a visiting scholar at the Center for Education Efficacy, Excellence, and Equity (E4).
Title: Exploring Excellence Gaps in Advanced STEM Education
Abstract: In this session, Dr. Bahar will discuss what excellence gaps are and how they manifest in advanced STEM programs, such as AP courses. Dr. Bahar will share the findings of his recent research on gender- and race-based excellence gaps in AP programs. He will also review systemic factors that contribute to these disparities. Participants will explore data from the past three decades, highlight the impact on historically underrepresented students, and discuss some strategies for bridging these disparities.
Biography: Dr. Kadir Bahar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia. His research focuses on equity and justice in advanced academics in STEM areas, with a specific focus on mathematics learning. Dr. Bahar serves as the Editor of the Gifted and Talented International, and he is on the editorial board of the Gifted Child Quarterly, Journal of Advanced Academics, and Gifted Education International. Dr. Bahar is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Emerging Scholar Award from the World Council for Talented Children and the Early Career Award from the National Asscoiation for Gifted Children Special Populations Network. During the 2024-2025 academic year, Dr. Bahar is a visiting scholar at the Center for Education Efficacy, Excellence, and Equity (E4) at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy (SESP).
