American jazz musician and composer Roy Hargrove was a trumpet and flugelhorn player renowned for his mastery of the hard bop style, as well as his genre-crossing collaborations with a variety of hip hop, neo soul, R&B, and alternative rock artists. His first three albums with Novus Records were some of the most commercially successful jazz recordings of the early 1990s, making him one of the jazz world’s most in-demand players. The winner of two Grammy Awards, Hargrove also received four other nominations during his career. Pianist, composer, and arranger Horace Silver helped to pioneer the hard bop style of jazz in the 1950s. He received his first big career break when his trio was recruited by Stan Getz, but it was his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers that launched him to fame. His hits “The Preacher,” “Doodlin’,” “Peace,” and “Sister Sadie” became jazz standards that are still widely performed.
