Active learning is an instructional methodology that engages students in activities that take them past listening and note-taking and moves them toward developing skills and higher-order thinking. Activities might include discussion, writing, reading, and other hands-on approaches that allow them to build new knowledge and understanding.
Active learning activities often include collaborative practices.
In this hands-on session, you will engage with active learning techniques through a tangible deck of "active learning activities" that you'll get to keep once the session is over. You will learn how to evaluate which activities might work best for your course, and strategies for implementation.
During this hands-on session, participants will:
Learn the cognitive science behind active learning
Employ a deck of active learning resources
Develop a plan for how to implement active learning in their courses
