This workshop provides a brief overview of the most popular features of two genome browsers: the UCSC Genome Browser and the Ensembl Genome Browser. Both browsers allow the user to retrieve comprehensive information on a gene or genomic sequence in context of the genome, with multiple customizable tracks to display curated data from numerous external sources for features such as polymorphisms, transcript variants and histone modifications.
This workshop will cover how to locate these browsers, manage tracks and annotations, get sequence data from the browser view, and download data from each site. We will compare how each browser displays data, so the user can decide which is best for their purposes.
Prerequisite: This workshop requires a laptop.
About the series: This workshop series is designed to cover foundational topics in computational genomics for the research community that uses the Genomics Compute Cluster (GCC) at Northwestern. Most workshops can be attended ad hoc, but some of the content builds on itself from week to week, and most require attendance at the first workshop of the series, Command Line Introduction, so please read the description of each. These workshops will be held in person on the Chicago campus. To participate fully, you will need to bring a laptop with you to each workshop.
