Northwestern University’s Hazard Communication Coordinator and Hazardous Waste Coordinator course focuses on the designation of a Hazard Communication Coordinator and Hazardous Waste Coordinator in each non-research department where there is a potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste. In this annually required course, designated coordinators will learn about their roles and responsibilities, including chemical container labeling, maintaining safety data sheet (SDS) inventories, and informing employees and contractors of hazardous chemicals, hazardous waste, and required precautions. The course includes a review of the key points of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, Northwestern University’s Hazard Communication Program and Hazardous Waste Program, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for hazardous waste storage, handling, and transportation. Employees will also learn about the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), how to identify and define hazardous waste, understand generator status categories, and their responsibilities when working with or around hazardous waste to assist the University in meeting OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements.
