The Black Professionals Network invites members to a creative and reflective art workshop led by Debra A. Blade, Assistant Director of Norris Programs and Recreation at the Norris University Center and a dedicated, longtime member of BPN. With more than four decades of service to Northwestern University, Debra brings a deep understanding of community, storytelling, and the power of shared creative spaces.
This workshop encourages participants to explore personal expression through form, color, and narrative. Drawing inspiration from the spirit of artists like Varnette P. Honeywood, whose vibrant paintings celebrated everyday Black life with warmth, pride, and cultural resonance, the session highlights art as a means of honoring lived experience. Honeywood’s work—known for its bold palettes, joyful depictions of community, and commitment to portraying Black life with dignity—serves as an uplifting touchstone as participants create pieces that reflect their own journeys.
Guided by Debra’s thoughtful facilitation, attendees will engage in hands‑on artistic exploration while connecting with fellow BPN members in a supportive, welcoming environment. No prior art experience is needed; the focus is on expression, reflection, and the freedom to create.
Join us for an afternoon that celebrates creativity, community, and the rich traditions that continue to shape Black artistic expression.
