DESCRIPTION:The Havey Institute for Global Health invites you to the July IGH Seminar\, featuring Farrah J. Mateen\, MD\, PhD\, chief of the Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology and director of the Center for Global Neurology at the Havey Institute for Global Health.  The Havey Institute for Global Health Seminar Series is held the first Wednesday of each month\, September through July\, and features the research and ideas of outstanding global health leaders at Feinberg\, the larger Northwestern community\, and beyond.   The speaker for July is:  Farrah J. Mateen\, MD\, PhD Charles L. Mix Professor of Neurology Research Chief\, Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Director\, Center for Global Neurology\, Robert J. Havey\, MD Institute for Global Health  Farrah J. Mateen\, MD\, PhD\, is originally from Saskatchewan\, Canada where she received her medical degree (2005). She pursued adult neurology training at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and a Fellowship in Medical Ethics at Harvard University (2008). Dr. Mateen's clinical and research fellowship training was at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (2012)\,  supported by the American Brain Foundation. Dr. Mateen completed her doctoral studies in International Health at the Johns Hopkins University (2014) as a Sommer Scholar. She was on faculty at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School (2013-2025). She joined Northwestern University in September 2025 as the Charles L. Mix Research Professor of Neurology and Chief of the Division of Multiple Sclerosis & Neuroimmunology. Her clinical practice is focused on neuroimmunology\, dedicated to therapeutic development in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica.   Dr. Mateen has been the Chair of the American Academy of Neurology's Global Health Section and Ethics Section and the International Outreach Committee of the American Neurological Association. She has worked with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees\, World Health Organization\, Polio Eradication Initiative in Switzerland and India\, and several non-governmental organizations across more than 30 countries of various income levels.
