SUMMARY:Daniel Fisher (Stanford University): NITMB Seminar Series
UID:644429@northwestern.edu
TZID:America/Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Spin Glass Theory and High-Dimensional Landscapes in Biology workshop. All are welcome to attend this seminar. Title: Beyond landscapes: ecological and evolutionary chaos Abstract: “Fitness landscapes” have long been a paradigm in evolutionary theory but especially with complex phenotypes\, this can be very misleading. Most importantly\, if there is ecological feedback from organisms modifying their environment as they evolve\, or when the environment is characterized by pathogens\, the evolutionary dynamics can be strikingly different. This talk will explore several simple models of the interplay between ecological and evolutionary dynamics taking advantage of the high-dimensionality of phenotype “space”. Various “phases” of Red Queen evolution\, characterized by continual turnover of closely related strains but no overall individual or community fitness increase\, are found. About the NITMB Seminar Series:   The NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology Seminar Series brings together a mix of mathematicians and biologists to foster discussion and collaboration between the two fields. The seminar series typically takes place on Fridays from 10am – 11am at NITMB. Talks are in-person with the ability to join remotely.
