SUMMARY:Colloquium: John Joseph Carrasco: "Double Copy: An Effective Approach to Quantum Gravity"
UID:646858@northwestern.edu
TZID:America/Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Gravity and gauge theory seem spectacularly different\, yet their physical predictions reveal a remarkable structural relationship known as the double copy.  I will discuss how this connection has evolved from a tool for calculating quantum scattering amplitudes into an organizing principle for gravitational effective field theories\, with recent applications ranging from precision gravitational-wave physics to a novel window into puzzling aspects of black holes emit radiation and decay. I will close with some open questions about how far this might go\, taking recent lessons from black hole studies to collective and cosmological spacetime.
