SUMMARY:Grad Student Colloquium with José Madrid
UID:647055@northwestern.edu
TZID:America/Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Join us for lunch and a discussion with José Madrid. José\, a PhD candidate in Black Studies\, will present his work "Enforcing Peace\," examining the U.S. and U.N.-brokered police and military reforms in El Salvador’s Chapúltepec Peace Accords (1992). José argues that these peace accords allowed postwar neoliberal regimes to maintain repressive racial\, social\, political\, and economic hierarchies by modernizing and expanding the Salvadoran state’s police infrastructure after the end of the civil war (1980-1992). Rather than addressing longstanding grievances between the El Salvador’s historically marginalized populations and the country’s repressive ruling class\, the peace accords implemented a hyper-carceral model of neoliberal governance and advanced the neoliberal interests of the U.S and Salvadoran ruling class under the guise of “protecting” postwar peace.    \n\nRegister: https://events.humanitix.com/grad-student-book-talk-with-kb-dennis-meade
