DESCRIPTION:Evan Shaman\,  Chandrasekhar Group "Development of a Cantilever Magnetometer for Magnetic Characterization of Mesoscopic Systems"    Understanding the magnetic profiles of mesoscopic systems offers important insight into their underlying physics. However\, current magnetometry techniques lack the sensitivity or versatility to measure magnetic phenomena in micron-sized samples. In this work\, we demonstrate the development and qualification of a cantilever magnetometer for sensitive measurements of nanoscale magnetic structures. The technique uses an Akiyama-probe cantilever driven near its resonance\, which responds to the torque of a magnetic field on an attached sample by shifting its resonant frequency. Combining the damped driven oscillator model with the torque on a magnetic moment offers a method for relating measured frequency shifts to the sample’s magnetization. We will present initial tests on nickel microstructures under both ambient conditions and at 4 K\, as well as further experiments on superconducting niobium films. The results are compared with an energy minimization numerical model to confirm the technique's proficiency. With the growing desire to detect microscopic quantum mechanical behavior in novel systems\, the described cantilever magnetometer represents a marked advancement.        Bjorn Vetne\, Geraci Group "Overview of ARIADNE" The Axion is a well-motivated hypothesized fundamental particle that serves as a solution to the strong CP problem. The Axion Resonant InterAction DetectioN Experiment (ARIADNE) is a tabletop experiment designed to probe into the QCD Axion parameter space. This is done using a spinning tungsten source mass to generate an axion pseudo-magnetic field that induces Larmor precession in a sample of hyperpolarized helium-3\, which is then read out through a SQUID.
