SUMMARY:Department of Pharmacology Seminar\, Lisa R Beutler\, MD\, PhD
UID:647310@northwestern.edu
TZID:America/Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lisa R Beutler\, MD PhD\, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology\, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine) Northwestern University Bio: Lisa Beutler earned her BS in genetics from UC Davis before completing her MD/PhD at the University of Washington where she performed her dissertation work in the lab of Dr. Richard Palmiter studying the neural circuits underlying addiction-like behavior in mice. She went on to complete medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at UCSF where she did postdoctoral research in the lab of Dr. Zachary Knight\, performing pioneering studies dissecting mechanisms of gut-brain communication underlying appetite and bodyweight regulation.   Her lab at Northwestern University now focuses on these same fundamental mechanisms\, on understanding how they go awry in disease processes that impact energy balance\, and on dissecting mechanisms underlying the efficacy of gut hormone-based anti-obesity therapies. In addition to authoring highly cited papers\, she has won numerous prestigious awards as an early-independent investigator including an ADA Pathway to Stop Diabetes Award\, a McKnight Foundation award\, and the Helmholtz Young Investigator in Diabetes Award.   Lecture Title: Dissecting the Gut-brain Dynamics of Anorexia and Aversion Abstract: Dr. Beutler’s lab is interested in uncovering how brain-body communication regulates feeding behavior\, and how this becomes disrupted in diseases that impact energy balance. In addition to studying how obesity and anti-obesity medications impact neural activity and behavior\, they are also dissecting the mechanisms through which severe inflammation suppresses appetite and causes food aversion
