SUMMARY:Holocaust Studies Online Roundtable "AI and the Holocaust – Threats\, Challenges\, Opportunities"
UID:647337@northwestern.edu
TZID:America/Chicago
DESCRIPTION:HEFNU Series: Holocaust Studies and Contemporary Issues AI and the Holocaust – Threats\, Challenges\, Opportunities Wednesday\, October 28\, 2026\, 9 AM PT/11 AM CT/12 PM ET Participants: Jennifer Goss\, Echoes & Reflections Victorian Richardson-Walden\, Independent Scholar Noah Shenker\, Colgate University Moderator:   Kathryn Huether\, Project on AI and Extremism\, UCLA. Questions and concerns about the use of AI its impact on education and research proliferate on college campuses – among students\, faculty\, and administrators – and at the secondary level. Yet “AI” does not refer to a single technology or application. It encompasses generative AI and Large Language Models such as ChatGPT\, as well as technologies already being used in archival and research contexts\, including image and text recognition\, automated transcription\, and metadata generation. With each come different possibilities\, limitations\, and concerns. These questions are no less pressing in the field of Holocaust Studies\, where the stakes are perhaps even higher. What impact is AI having on archives\, particularly digital archives? How is AI shaping Holocaust education? Holocaust memory? What forms of safeguards are in place? What questions should we be asking? And how can we help our students and the broader public engage critically with AI—not as a single technology\, but as a range of tools increasingly shaping how we encounter\, understand\, and remember the past? Join us for a discussion of these questions hosted by the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University and moderated by Kathryn Huether\, Project on AI and Extremism\, UCLA.
