“Targeting Myocardial Recovery in Heart Failure Using the EDW”

The growing heart failure epidemic poses a significant clinical and economic challenge. Heart failure patients are a heterogeneous group with multiple reasons for myocardial dysfunction. Various trajectories (e.g. recovery, remission, death) patients follow after the onset of heart failure likely represent disease-specific phenotypes. Unfortunately, we currently do not have good ways to predict an individual’s course at the outset. Additionally, most recent large clinical trials conducted in patients with heart failure have been negative in terms of efficacy or safety. This may be in part due to study populations not being representative of the particular mechanism targeted by the drug being tested. The Enterprise Data Warehouse offers the ability to characterize a patient population, which may allow clinicians and researchers to better distinguish between patients with (and without) the potential for recovery. Adequately phenotyping this population will increase the likelihood of identifying a priori predictors of long-term outcomes like recovery, and also has the potential to better target individuals in clinical trials, and in turn more optimally investigate both novel and existing therapies.
