Amina Tawasil's research focus is on the intersection of women and Islamic education. She is the recipient of the American Association of University Women fellowship for her dissertation, "The Howzevi (seminarian) Women of Iran: Constituting and Reconstituting Paths." She recently received her PhD in anthropology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and was appointed an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Middle East and North African Studies at Northwestern (2013–15), with a courtesy appointment in Anthropology. Her research interests include labor migration, refugee studies, and human/sex trafficking.
