The San Francisco Chronicle asserts, “Hopkinson Smith, without a doubt, is the finest lute player in the world today.” Internationally recognized as a leading personality in the field of early music and one of the world’s great lutenists, Smith gives concerts and mas¬ter classes throughout Europe and North and South America. Since the mid-1980s he has focused prin-cipally on solo music for early plucked instruments. These include the vihuela, renaissance lute, theorbo, renaissance and baroque guitars, and baroque lute. Through his recitals and over 20 solo recordings, he continues to rediscover and bring to life works that are among the most expressive and intimate in the entire domain of early music. His program features lute masterpieces from the 1580s and ‘90s by John Dowland, John Johnson, and Anthony Holborne.
