Third Coast CFAR Seminar:

"HIV and Inflammation: A Dangerous Liaison"

Irini Sereti, MD, MHS

Dr. Irini Sereti has worked in the area of HIV immunopathogenesis with a focus on the host and the immunologic aspects of disease from the beginning of her Infectious diseases fellowship at NIH. Most of Sereti’s projects as a fellow initially and as an independent investigator later on addressed aspects of immune activation and dysregulation in HIV and immune-based interventions to abrogate it with a special focus on severely immunosuppressed HIV persons with very low CD4 T cell counts and opportunistic infections (OIs). Many of Sereti’s studies have also addressed the immune recovery of these patients after initiation of anti-retroviral therapy. Through her HIV work Sereti started studying patients with Idiopathic CD4 lymphopenia (ICL) who are also immunosuppressed (low CD4 counts, and occasionally other lymphopenias) and get OIs but do not have HIV.
