Abstract: Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety has become a distinct field of Health Services and Outcomes Research. A main focus of the field is how to do quality improvement. Many approaches to improvement have been applied to healthcare such as PDSA, DMAIC, and 8D. All of these approaches are aligned with the scientific method and emphasize the importance of defining the problem and measurement. Since measurement is key to the process, the use of innovative informatics methods is essential to advancing healthcare quality improvement. I have started to work on Dr. Nicholas Soulakis’ project of defining a teamwork measure. Teamwork is an essential part of healthcare and has been recognized as a crucial quality improvement area. In order to improve teamwork, measurement is key.
