"Viral and Host Determinants of Avian H5N1 Influenza Virus Pathogenesis"
Balaji Manicassamy, PhD / University of Chicago
Description
Avian influenza virus infections are severe and often fatal
in humans. We have determined that avian H5N1 influenza virus infects
endothelial cells and causes increased damage in the lungs. In addition, we
have determined that T cell functions, which are important for timely viral
clearance from the lungs, are suppressed during H5N1 infection. These
studies provide the mechanistic basis for the severe and prolonged disease
associated with H5N1 infections.
