On May 12, 2008, a massive earthquake devastated much of China's Sichuan Province and was felt 1000 miles away in Beijing. Chinese politics and society were jolted by this catastrophe, even as recovery began on the ground. Ten years later, as we remember the human tragedy of the disaster, it is also appropriate to reflect upon and assess the earthquake's longer-term implications for the Chinese government, the CCP, civil society, and ordinary people, as well as for the wider world.
