"Improving Men’s Participation in Behavioral Weight Control Interventions”

Despite the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in men, they are underrepresented in programs focused on weight control and weight loss. This talk will report: 1) results of a randomized comparison of messages designed to improve recruitment of men into a study of weight gain prevention and 2) the results of a randomized trial testing the efficacy a novel, men-only weight loss intervention.

“Expanding Epidemiologic Investigations into Heart – Lung Interaction from Health to Disease”

Dr. Michael Cuttica & Dr. Ravi Kalhan recently have expanded their respiratory epidemiology research portfolio by obtaining funding to conduct an ancillary study in CARDIA focused on loss (and preservation) of lung health and heart – lung interaction from young adulthood through middle age. Given the opportunity this presents for expanded analyses and new areas of investigation, we would like brainstorm ideas to further develop this research theme and grow our program further

Description:

“An Overview of Research Designs for Dissemination and Implementation”

By its very nature, Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) research is intimately connected to understanding how programs, practices, or policies work in different contexts, so there is more attention in D&I research on external validity, as contrasted to the heavy emphasis on internal validity that many of the traditional public health and medical randomized efficacy and some effectiveness trials address. This presentation is a product of a workgroup meeting of 10 scientists and NIH staff, convened by NIH to facilitate D&I research. We identified 27 designs and categorize these designs into several broad categories, including 1) “traditional translational pipeline” designs that move step by step from efficacy, to effectiveness, to implementation research, 2) hybrid designs, which combine elements of effectiveness and implementation research in one design, and 3) quality improvement. Additionally, we discuss cross-cutting issues, including community engagement and ethics in conducting implementation research.
