A new pyramid of human motivation: Maslow meets Darwin meets modern cognitive science
Abstract: "What drives human thoughts and actions? My colleagues and I have suggested a reconstruction of Maslow’s pyramid of motives that builds upon later developments in evolutionary biology and cognitive science. This new view of motivation has the potential to unite several subdisciplines of psychology, and to link with other basic and applied disciplines. We have recently developed a scale to measure individual differences in fundamental motives (self-protection, disease-avoidance, affiliation, status, mate search, mate retention, and parenting). I will discuss potentially important applications to clinical psychology and to several areas of business."
