Helping Women and Girls of Color to Thrive

Abstract:
The significant disparities affecting girls of color (i.e. school push-out, disproportionate engagement with foster care and juvenile justice systems, and diminished economic prospects, including in the STEM workforce) each have a mental health impact. Women and girls of color face unique stressors that are compounded by the intersection of race and gender.
There is a growing acceptance of the importance of mental health, particularly among college students. Intersectional mental health approaches recognize the impact of race and gender on coping, but make room for young women to have a say in what that care looks like, by actively inquiring about preferences.
