Description:

This 90-minute practicum will examine the questions and themes that animate the upcoming Arendt on Earth (Humanities without Walls) Earth and Expropriation workshop on Nov 22.  The class is open to any scholar whose research touches on themes of political theory, as well as anyone generally interested in how to “think what we are doing” in the face of unpredictable climate change;  the disastrous effects of unregulated technological production and consumption; the “defactualization” of the world by rising authoritarian and fascistic movements and the general corruption of truth in politics; the ecologically induced or exacerbated conditions of poverty, displacement, statelessness which have havoc wrought on human security; and the crises of legitimacy, power, and freedom that face democratic peoples today. It is also open to those working in cognate or related fields (e.g. anthropology, religious studies, critical theory, etc.).  While the discussion will be tailored to the specific needs and interests of those who RSVP to attend, we will broadly question the implications of the Anthropocene in relation to the human condition, as well as questions of global justice given the asymmetry in contributions to ecological destruction by advanced capitalist economies, and the outsize impact on developing countries. Questions about upcoming opportunities to more substantively engage with the remaining Arendt on Earth workshops and conference will also be addressed.

Students should come to the practicum ready to discuss the thematic elements listed above and should have completed the assigned readings (below).

Readings (Required):

Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition (Prologue and Chap 6)

RSVP is not required, but encouraged. Please contact Gina Giliberti <ginagiliberti2020@u.northwestern.edu> for scans of the readings
