Description:

Present.Perfect.
(Shengze Zhu, 2019, Digital, USA/Hong Kong, 124 min, in Mandarin with English subtitles)

Shengze Zhu’s award-winning experimental documentary Present.Perfect surveys contemporary China through the lives of live-streaming “anchors” broadcasting their everyday experiences to unseen audiences around the world. From over 800 hours of recorded live-streaming footage, Chicago-based filmmaker Zhu crafts an absorbing, far-ranging cinematic essay on the construction and performance of identity, posing stark questions about community, labor, gender, disability, and the economic forces that shape our social realities. In Mandarin with English subtitles.

In person: filmmaker Shengze Zhu

Co-presented by Block Cinema with the MFA in Documentary Media at Northwestern.
