Shengze Zhu’s award-winning experimental documentary Present.Perfect surveys contemporary China through the lives of live-streaming “anchors” broadcasting their everyday experiences to unseen audiences around the world. From over 800 hours of recorded live-streaming footage, Chicago-based filmmaker Zhu crafts an absorbing, far-ranging cinematic essay on the construction and performance of identity, posing stark questions about community, labor, gender, disability, and the economic forces that shape our social realities.
