What are the purpose of grades? Grades can measure student progress, provide feedback, and provide qualification for other courses and work. However, studies have shown that grades can also reflect implicit and institutional biases. Instructors may often replicate grading practices that they experienced during their educational training, including many that rely on subjective assessments or soft skills not actually taught in the course. How can we create more transparent and equitable grading processes across the variety of courses offered in political science? In this interactive workshop, a panel of instructors with experience teaching a range of courses will discuss potential pitfalls of certain grading practices and offer practical grading strategies to empower students and encourage growth.
