Description:

Hosted by Stephen Hill, Senior Associate Director, Office of Fellowships. The Office of Fellowships Grant-Writing Workshop serves Northwestern graduate students in several ways. First, it introduces students to the Office of Fellowships. We cover the Office’s position on campus and our services, introduce our staff, and tour our website. Second, it teaches productive approaches to identifying fitting opportunities for students. We look at the best databases of fellowships opportunities, geared towards the discipline(s) of the students in attendance. Third, it explains approaches to conceptualizing and writing proposals. For groups of students early in their program, we focus on fruitful ways to conceptualize the goals of grant writing. For groups later in their program, we consider the sections of a thorough grant essay and suggest ways to avoid pitfalls.

Questions and comments are encouraged throughout, and we seek to engage in a dynamic conversation about this important topic. It is impossible to convey all critical information in one session, of course. The intention of this workshop is to introduce students to the basics of the grant-writing process and to familiarize students with how we can assist them through our Office.
