This presentation explores three competing representations of women produced by Pioneer generation artist Mahmoud Moukhtar (1891-1934), Valentine de Saint Point (1875-1953), and member of the Art and Liberty Group, Kamel El Temissany (1915-1972). I argue that these three works position these figures as avatars of an emerging, interstitial social and political agency capable of navigating colonial-era, interwar Egypt.
