ChatGPT in the Classroom: Ask a Computer Scientist!
Katherine Compton, PhD
Assistant Professor of Instruction (Computer Science)
McCormick School of Engineering
Learning Objectives
1. Understand why we can't practically avoid students using ChatGPT and other generative models in class work.
2. See a range of things that these models are good at (explorations of topics and interactivity) and bad at (correctness and citations).
3. Gain several strategies for students to use generative models as a flawed-but-useful mentor, rather than a cheating strategy.
4. Discuss solutions for student accountability when using generative models, while keeping instructor burdens manageable.
5. Have time to ask questions they may have about this field, and have them answered honestly (to the best of cutting-edge knowledge).
