Please join the Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies Research Program (REEES) and the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs for the next virtual event of the series “East Meets West” where a panel of global and local experts on the Ukrainian refugee crises will address the questions below and more.
About:
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, more than 6.2 million refugees have fled Ukraine, most to Europe and approximately 300,000 to the United States. This flow of displaced persons is one of the largest refugee crises in the last fifty years. What has been of the experiences of refugees in Europe and the United States? What challenges have they faced? What are their hopes for the future of Ukraine and their intentions to return? How has the Chicago area welcomed them?
Nika Lelizarova, lead for the YOUkraine research project within the Factum Group, located in Kyiv, Ukraine, will present the findings from an extensive study of Ukrainian refugees living abroad. She will discuss their experiences, the reasons for leaving Ukraine, and their intentions and motivations for returning to Ukraine.
The presentation will be followed by commentary and discussion from Tetiana Skrypchenko, Head of international projects, Rating Group, Kyiv, Ukraine, Serhiy Koledov, Consul General of Ukraine, Chicago, U.S., and local insights on the Ukrainian refugee experience from Walter Tun, CEO, Selfreliance Association, Chicago, U.S.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Olga Kamenchuk, Associate Professor of Research and Instruction, School of Communication, Northwestern University
