Description:

Please join the Political Science department and REEES for a roundtable on shared interests and security priorities between European and US with Estonian Minister of Defense, Hanno Pevkur. This talk will be moderated by Professor William Reno.

In the spirit of strengthening transatlantic relations, GMF’s Across America initiative takes European and transatlantic foreign policy conversations to communities across the United States.  GMF and Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur will be visiting Illinois and Iowa from April 7-10 on an educational trip that builds connections and identifies shared interests and security priorities between European and US stakeholders who live outside national capitals. With this effort, GMF reaffirms the legacy of the Marshall Plan and former Secretary of State Dean Acheson’s famous nationwide tour that aimed to communicate to the American public the importance of Europe's post-World War II recovery for US vital interests in “political and economic stability” and “promoting human freedom and democratic institutions”.

Hanno Pevkur is the Estonian Minister of Defence and former chairman of the Estonian Reform Party. He has served as the Minister of Social Affairs from 2009 to 2012, as the Minister of Justice from 2012 to 2014 and as the Minister of the Interior from 2014 to 2016. Pevkur graduated from the Tallinn School of Economics in 1998 with a degree in law, and from the Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu in 2002.
